March 2010 Newsletter

It is Thursday, February 25th and I have three days to come up with my March newsletter. We are presently enduring our second large snowstorm of the month. First there was “Snowmagedon” on the Wednesday before Valentine’s Day and now we’re in a “Snowicane”. I know I don’t speak for too many people, but I like snow. It’s winter and we live in Pennsylvania. I am used to it by now. My store was open today, but I didn’t have too many walk in customers, except for this one lady.

A forty-something woman walked in with her young daughter who will be 16 in two weeks. I have known this woman for a good portion of her life. I met her when she was a sophomore in high school. I made flowers for her to wear at her school’s Father-Daughter dance. A year later she went to the prom and we made her the most unique wrist corsage for her special night. She went off to college for a few years and when she returned, there was a young man in her life. I then had the pleasure of planning her wedding flowers with her and her mother. What a splendid event. Several years went by and when they had their daughter, congratulatory flowers were sent to her and her husband for the arrival of their new bundle of joy. (If my math is correct that was 16 years ago.) About 10 years ago her family threw an elaborate and tasteful turn of the century New Year’s Party where Michael Thomas Floral Design Studio created the decorations and the table centerpieces. We sat together today and reminisced about how much fun they had that night in 2000.

During holiday seasons I would take my helpers and we would assist her put professionally designed Christmas decorations up at their residence. As young professionals, they had very busy schedules and we loved taking care of the details for them. This woman came to me today to plan her daughter’s 16th birthday party; she’s now a sophomore at the same school her mother attended. The party is a “Broadway” theme complete with top hats, boas and a New York City skyline. Both of us remembered all the events over the past 25 – 30 years, but neither of us wanted to admit that we had in fact gotten any older.

As they left the flower shop, I began to think of some of the other events she and I have shared because of flowers and all the services we have provided to her, our customer, over the years. She said, “Hard to believe my daughter is going to be 16.” I responded, “My daughter Emily will celebrate her 24th birthday in March also.” Happy Birthday Em. Everything circles around and comes back again. There are so many people, (I hate to think of them as only customers) I have known for a substantial period of time. We have shared happy times and sad times with all of you, our friends. Flowers can play such an important part of those relationships.

This March if there are any special birthdays, anniversaries, births, weddings or parties, click on our website at www.michaelthomasfloral.com, phone us at (610) 821-1051 or stop by the store like this lady did and share your life with us through flowers.

Happy March!
Mickey
